"Do you know where I Krypteria's C.D.s are? I can't seem to find them."
She asked, her voice a little shy. Jace Kane didn't like asking people for things. It made her feel uncomfortable, inferior. The woman she asked looked a little tired, but remained friendly. She didn't look to happy, and Jason had guessed the friendliness was some sort of employee must-do. Poor lady, tired and being forced to help people find things all day, getting yelled at by unhappy customers. She felt bad for the thirty-something year old girl.
"They're right over their darling, second isle to the left. Let me know if you need anything else."
Jace could hear it in her voice that she was hoping she wouldn't need anything else.
"Thank you, Miss," She paused to look at her name tag. "....Kathy. Oh, and by the way, your bracelet is simply the cutest thing I've ever seen."
That put a smile on Miss Kathy's face. She must not get compliments often. She wasn't the prettiest lady around. Jace smiled back at her and nodded. Kathy thanked her while she made her way to the C.D. she was looking for. The isle was filled with C.D.s, some bands she knew, others she didn't. Some didn't even look like bands, just like clowns. That's why she loved music shopping though. The variety of things they had made her happy. She didn't like the same things being played over and over again. It just didn't seem practical.
When she found her C.D. she got in line for purchase, she patiently waited. Then her turn came up, and Kathy was still on her shift. How long did she work there? All day? Or maybe she was filling in for someone.
"Did you find everything alright?" Did anyone ever say no to that question? Jace never did, not once in her life. As far as she knew, neither did her parents.
"Yes, ma'am. Thanks to you." Jace said, again, politely. She was also so nice and polite. Always.
"Well, how 'bout I give you a ten percent discount. You look like you could use it." Miss Kathy said with a small wink. Karma, karma, karma. Jace had always believed in it. There wasn't really luck, it was just karma and kind people.
"Oh that'd be great. Thanks."
"No, thank you. Come again soon!"
Jace probably would. She always went C.D. shopping, her bedroom walls were filled with the brim with them. She walked outside the storms doors, and sat against the wall. And just like she did every time she finished her shopping, she pulled out a cigarette. Now, she knew there were smoking areas in the mall...but she also knew no one really gave a shit. Aside from a few assholes, most people just walked on. Some even asked for one or two. She lit her Marlboro Lights without a second thought.
